MANY ROOFING TILES FROM INDIA BROKEN

SYDNEY, May 10.

The State Building Materials Department has called for an examination of Indian tiles being imported into Australia.

When the first big shipment arrived last, week, it was found that 50,000 of 250.000 tiles were broken. Orders have been placed in India for 5,000,000 tiles, enough to cover 2000 roofs. The Minister for Building Materials, Mr Dickson, has ordered special tests of the tiles by the Commonwealth building . experimental station and Public Works Department. Builders who have taken delivery are awaiting the tests before using the tiles. Several home-builders have rejected Indian tiles.

The cost of the tiles is about £2O a roof more than Australian.
