ATOM BOMB DEFENCE
EXPERTS’ CONFERENCE MELBOURNE, April 28. A conference to prepare a master plan for defence against bombing, including atomic bombs, began in Melbourne yesterday. It was attended by representatives of the Works, Defence, Treasury and other Federal departments. Discussions will be based on a secret report from the British Government concerning defences against rockets. The report was prepared by Sir Reginald Stradling, who recently visited Australia. Other information compiled at Hiroshima and Bikini will also be studied. It is believed that because of the information contained in the reports, new Commonwealth buildings will be of rigid frame and reinforced concrete construction. In Canberra, the Prime Minister, Mr. Chifiey, discounted a warning by United States leaders that the prospect of war is nearer. He said there had been some frictional incidents, but he saw no reason to depart from the judgment of several months ago, which held that neither Russia nor any other European country had an industrial capacity to embark upon war.
