MOTU RUGBY WIN
COMPETITION OPENING DEFEAT OF MATAWAI Though conditions were very wet fast open play was witnessed in the Motu Rugby Sub-union's competitionopening game on Saturday when Motu took a 16 —6 decision over Matawai on the Matawai ground. The better combination of the Motu rearguard was the deciding factor. Outstanding in the Motu back line were W. Spence at centre and L. Thompson at first five-eighth. The latter was responsible for making several openings leading to tries. P. O’Rourke was the outstanding forward for Motu with D. Richardson and G. Hutchins also working well. For Matawai J. McMillan on the wing played an outstanding game on defence. With few opportunities he was always dangerous. D. Thompson at first fiveeight showed promise. In the Matawai forwards M. Kerekere was a hard worker in the tight and J. Dunning, break-away, showed great promise. W. Spence and G. Twistleton each scored two tries for the winners, one conversion each being added by P. O’Rourke and L. Thompson. The Matawai points came from a try by D. Thompson and a penalty goal by D. Kerekere. Next Saturday Matawai meet Cattle Creek, play commencing at 2 p.m.
