OPENING OF SEASON WELCOME TO VISITORS Under favourable weather conditions the season’s official opening of the Gisborne Park Golf Club attracted a large gathering of club players and a pleasing representation from district clubs. For an opening day the standard in the Canadian foursome was surprisingly high and the winning pair, Miss Miller and F. H. Stephenson, of the Poverty Bay club, carded 88-28-60. Other 'good ‘scores were: Miss Byers and Craighead. 81-17-64; Miss Gordon and W. Watts, 92-27-65; Mrs. Mernes and A. Tarr. 85-20-65: Mrs. Meyrlck and D. Hamilton, 95-27-68; Mrs. Bradley and J. Morgan, 92-24-68; Mrs. Dolman and B. Corbett, 84-16-68; R. Edwards and partner, 84-16-68; Mrs. Innes and P. H. Dow, 85-16-69: Mrs. Lovelock and R. Mclnnes, 94-25-69: Mrs. Hutchinson and J. Dodgshun, 77-7-70; Mr. and Mrs. A. Vickers. 95-23-72. At the conclusion of play, afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee. On behalf of the club, Mi’. L. Lunken expressed gratification concerning the attendance for the opening ceremony and thanked Hie members of other clubs for their support. He referred to the programme of improvements to the course and, in expressing appreciation of the co-operation of members, appealed for support to the | coaching scheme for young and B grade players. Mr R W. J. Edwards and Mr. D. Tennant replied for the Poverty Bay and Turanganui clubs respectively. The Dryland Cup challenge resulted in a win for S. Parker and D. Hamilton. 4 and 2. after an interesting game with C. Fletcher and W. Watts. T. W. Bayliss produced the best card in a bogey competition, the details being 86-19-67. one up.
