REVIVAL OF CRICKET
SUPPORT APPRECIATED PLAY IN P.B. AREA Appreciation of Ihe support given to the game in ihe district by players, the general public and those co-operating in tlie administrative details was voiced on behalf of the P.B. Cricket Association by the patron, Mr, F. R. Picrc.v and the president. Mr. J. A. CrnwfordSmilli, at Ihc season “wind-un” social lief cl on Saturday evening in the gymnasium of the Rugby Old Bovs Club. During speeches supporting an appropriate toast list reference was made to the increase in the number of teams in the competitions and the stiffening of the standard in the top grade as factors in an eminently successful season, the leading feature of which, the attractive display of (he Fiji touring side, had been the highlight of many years.
As the mess president. Mr. Piercy gave the loyal toast and also the principal tribute of the evening, that to the Rugby Old Boys Club. The excellent club organisation had been a leading influence in the recent revival of the game and those associated in the efforts merited the thanks of all followers of the sport, said Mr. Piercy. The club members were also to be congratulated on having won the championships in each of the three grades. The club captain, Mr. P. A. Fargher, renlied to the toast. When the season’s trophies were formally presented it was announced that Mr. W. J. Wilkie would donate a cun for award next season to the top allrounder in the second grade competition.
The trophies wore presented as follows: Barry Cup (Senior A championship!, Rugby Old Boys: Alhambra Shield (runner-up Senior A championship). United: Hope Cun (Senior B championship), Rugby Old Boys: C. Adair Cup (runners-up Senior B championship). Gisborne High School; Crrmney Cup (Second grade championship). Rugby Old Boys; Miller Cup (runners-up. Second grade championship). Gisborne High School (II): Fraser Shield (aggregate runs. Senior A). P. 11. Dow, United: W. Stewart Cup (batting, bowling, fielding. Senior A), G- O. Rnhcno, United: S. I\. White Cup (team punctuality, discipline and dress) United Senior A: Chrisp Cup (howling. Senior A), T, A. Downes, H. 5.0.8.: File Shield (week-end play), Corinthians. Other toasts were: “Umpires Association.” proposed by Mr. R. IT. Cook, responded to by Mr. L. Jackson: “Sunporters,” Messrs. T. N. Godyc—F. R. Piercy; "Sister Sports.” Messrs. E. C. Martin—.T. Blanc; “The Clubs,” Mr. Crawford-Smith; “The Management Committee." Messrs. P. 11. Dow — Crawford-Smith; “Our Patron,” Mr. Crawford-Smith, and “The Press,” Mr. R. C. Machines. Items were given by Messrs. J. Fitzmnurice. N. Lee. .1. Gillespie. P. Scholium. G. McGregor, W. J. Wilkie, T. M. Sharp, and N. Anderson.
