CATTLE DROWNED
TRUCK FALLS INTO CREEK (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 24. A truck driver, his young daughter, and an elderly woman escaped with minor cuts and abrasions and five cattle were drowned when a heavy trailer truck carrying cattle crashed through the railings of a bridge into the mud of a tidal creek about six miles from Papakura. The vehicle was going downhill toward the bridge with a load of cattle penned in the trailer when a collision occurred with another truck. The cattle truck fell 25ft. down the earth embankment into the soft tidal mud and shallow water. The occupants of the truck scrambled out but were forced to leave the cattle. The tide was coming in and soon covered most of the body of the truck, which was lying upside down in the mud. A few of the cattle were thrown clear in the accident, but those that were trapped were drowned.
