HEAVY BETS LAID SYDNEY. April 1. A bogus bookmaker who laid huge sums to Sydney and country clients in straight-out bets and doubles on the Doncaster and Sydney Cup has disapneared. . „ , .. The man. who had offered fantastic prices about the Doncaster and Cup double, could not be located in Sydney. He was said to be unknown at a Pitt street address he had given as his business office. He told clients he was a registered bookmaker and operated in the Paddock at Randwick, and that he was a member of Tattersall’s Club. He made a personal tour of big country towns and Quoted doubles and straieht-out prices for the Doncaster and Sydnev Cup many points over prevailing odds. He is reported to have had liabilities amounting to more than £20,000 on some combinations of horses. Convincing Talker The man is believed to be a firstclass confidence man. In his tour of country towns he was able to convince punters he was the head of a rich syndicate, which, because of the money behind it was in a position to offer better odds than Randwick bookmakers.
