PIRATES CAUGHT
£IBO,OOO ROBBERY RINGLEADERS IDENTIFIED CHINA COAST GANG (10.30) liONGKONG, April 23. Officers of the Dutch steamer Van Heufcsz today identified four of six suspects as ringleaders of an armed pirate gang which captured the ship north of Hong Kong on December 15 and escaped next day with booty worth £IOO,OOO (N.Z.). The gang, numbering 25 men, boarded the ship as passengers and the robbery was the worst on the China coast for many years. The pirates also took six Chinese for ransom, three of whom were recently released without making payment, including a son of Tan Kah Kee, a Singapore millionaire, whose philanthropic reputation is alleged to have won his son’s freedom. The others had not any money. The suspects were arrested after intensive investigations culminating in simultaneous raids yesterday on four premises in Hong Kong and Kowloon. Banknotes and jewellery valued at over £SOOO (N.Z.) were found on the premises. The suspects were charged with piracy on the high seas and were remanded.
