QUALITY CHILLED BEEF

WAIROA COMPETITIONS (S.R.) WAIROA, April 23. A chilled beef competition conducted yesterday at Swifts works drew 38 entries. Some very fine beasts came forward, said Mr. L. Harris, who judged on the hoof. He said he found it necessary to disqualify a number of beasts due to excess weight or being over done. At least 20 of those judged would do credit to any competition, while 10 of that number would catch the eye of any judge. Mr. F. Kelly, who judged on the hooks, said the beef was of good type and quality and was noticeable for the lack of excess fat. The placed entries were at excellent weights and were nicely finished. The winning entry was outstanding, possessing every requirement for judging. A notable success was achieved by Mr. G. F. Jardine whose entries all came from bulls bred by Mr. R. E. Jefferson. Mr. Jardine gained first, second, third and fifth on the hoof and first, second and fourth on the hooks, taking £24 of the £3O donated as prize money by the Meat Board.

Results: — On the hoof. —Mr. Jardine, 1,2, 3 and 5; Mr. W. L. Torbett 4. On the hooks. —Mr. Jardine, 1,2, 4; Pakawhai station, 3 and 5.
