N.Z. ORDERS SHIPS
AUSTRALIAN YARDS FREIGHTERS FOR U.S.S. COY. (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 23. The first overseas orders foi oceangoing merchant ships have been placed with the State dockyards at Newcastle by the Uunion Steam Ship Company' of New Zealand The orders are for two 3000-ton motor-ships. The Union Company spokesman said the ships would be used as freighters between Sydney and Tasmania They will be powered by two Deisel engines with a surface speed of 10 knots. The vessels would have an over all length of 305 ft. The State Minister of Works and Local Government, Mr. J Cahill, commented that the orders marked a notable stage in the progress of the Australian shipbuilding industry.
