SUNDAY WORK
DOUBLE RATE URGED HOSPITAL NURSES (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH. April 21. Double time for Sunday work done by nurses is to be sought by the Taranaki Hospital Board which decided in New Plymouth yesterday to send a remit to the Hospital Boards’ Association, suggesting that discussions be held with the Minister or Health regarding the amendment to the new salary scale to place nurses on a comparable basis with other Sunday workers. The chairman, Mr. P. E. Stainton, said the nurses salary scale was completed at the end of November but by the time of its issue it bad become out of date in connection with overtime for Sunday work. In the award released in December domestics and porters at hospitals and hotels received double time for Sunday work, even if Sunday was included in the 40-hour week. It was only fair that other members of the hospital staff, including nurses and doctors, should be treated similarly.
