SEARCH OF LINER
LOSSES OF FOODSTUFFS LONDON, April 20. Ministry of Food officials last night made a surprise search of the P. and O. liner Palana which arrived from Australia with 12,000 tons of foodstuffs and hundreds of Red Cross parcels. They visited the liner at (he Royal Victoria Dock, London, and sealed the hatches. Later, the Minister of Fond, Mr. J. Strache.v, said the authorities were checking losses of foodstuffs and were trying to discover whether the losses occurred on arrival at Britain or during loading at the port of origin. There was not an enormous loss, but the Government was keen to reduce it to a minimum. Mr. Strachey said the Palana was not the first sliip to be checked and he would not say whether the Palana was chosen for a special reason.
