PAPER FOR BRITAIN
U.S. FUNDS URGED REQUEST TO CONGRESS SUPPLY FOR 12 MONTHS (N.Z.l’.A.—Renter— Copyright.) (10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April 21. Mr. Paul Hoffman. Economic Cooperation Administrator, who controls the physical mechanism of United States’ foreign aid. is asking Congress to appropriate 22.000,000 dollars to buy newsprint for Britain during the next 12 months. The request follows a warning by Lord Rothermere, publisher of the London Daily Mail, who said yesterday that because of lack of newsprint the English newspapers could not _ freely accomplish the task of disseminating news of world importance. In New York today, Lord Rothermere said: ‘‘Mr. Hoffman’s action is enlightened statemanship. There is no more important commodity than newsprint at this time of international tension and difficulty. To give an ade qunte coverage of world affairs Britain needs bigger newspapers. This farsighted action will, I hope, result in an easing of our problems.”
