SEVERE DAMAGE
BANKS AND HOTEL ROADS NOW PASSABLE (P.A.) AUCKLAND. April 19. Patrols of the. Automobile Association (Auckland) report that with one exception roads in the area are usable. The exception is the Waihi-Whanga-matoa road which follows th e coast north of Waihi. The Works Department states that it will be at least one week before the road is useable. Later reports from Whakatane state that four trading bank buildings—the Union, Australasia. National and New Zealand —were badly damaged by water and silt.
The Whakatane Hotel’s fittings were severely damaged. The situation in the town is ,now well under control.
