WATER CHAMPIONS

CENTRE CONTESTS

GISBORNE SUCCESSES

RELAY CUP VICTORY (S.R.) NAPIER, March 22. Forty swimmers from Gisborne competed with considerable success in the opening sessions during the weekend of the annual championships of the Hawke’s Bay Swimming Centre and further prominent performances are expected of them in the concluding events this evening. Considering the lack of training facilities during the greater part of the season, the achievements of the Gisborne contenders held exceptional merit. Supporters of the team brought the number of the party from Gisborne to approximately 60. The party included Messrs. W. T. McKeague, president of the Gisborne Surf and Swimmnig Club, S- T. Moss, treasurer, H. Bodle, diving judge, and J. Butler, team manager.

On the whole very satisfactory performances marked the contests, but lack of practice necessitated by the closing of public swimming baths in +he interests of public health during the height of the polomyelitis epidemic was reflected in some rather indifferent racing. Few of the established records suffered, but B. McLean, Gisborne, shattered the previous best performance in the 50 yards free-style boys under 14 event, his time of 29 4-ssec. bettering the record by a full second.

The relay race for the Swain Memorial Cup with each competitor swimming 100 yards was won with ease by Gisborne. Turnbull swam first for Gisborne but did not finish too well. Bodle, the veteran went to the lead and retained it. The next swimmer, Box, maintained the lead and Holmes, Gisborne's mainstay, attacked the concluding distance in masterly fashion, finishing half a length ahead of Heretaunga in second place. The time was 4min. 24sec.
