THIRSTY AUSTRALIANS

EASTER SHOW ATTRACTION

SALE OF BEER BANNED

SYDNEY. March 22

The presence of beer in quantity at the Roval Easter Show which promised to be 'the greatest draw card at the opening on Saturday failed to assuage the three weeks’ thirst of the Sydney public.

Faced with the threat of a black ban on the show and the possibility of stampeding crowds concerned only with investigating the “exhibits” in the 11 licensed bars, the Royal Agricultural Society reluctantly decided to ban the sale of beer at the Showgrounds for the duration of the show unless the beer strike was settled in the meantime.

One licensee was told that the selling of beer would be offensive to those engaged in the brewery strike, and might cause ail unionist employees at the Showgrounds a sympathy strike. Thousands of men, many of whom had never attended a Show before, lined up at the bars and held their places bydrinking wine and spirits until 11 a.m, when they thought beer would be served Twelve men were later arrested for drunkenness. 1
