CHANGE URGED
IMPORTS SYSTEM
RETAILERS’ PROPOSAL
GREATER FLEXIBILITY
fP.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH. March 17. Holding that, there exists an urgent and growing need for a more flexible and more easily operated system of import control, the annual conference of the New Zealand Retailers' Federation adopted a report of a subcommittee calling for a revision of the present procedure. Mr. J. A. Yates (Wellington), said there were three main requirements to bring about improvement. First, a stabilised long-range policy of issuing licenses: secondly, larger basic allocations and fewer special licenses: and, thirdly, more flexibility as between tariff items-
If the present system was revised, as suggested, many of the existing anomalies and difficulties would disappear. The conference decided in conjunction with other interested organisations to place its recommendations before the Minister of Customs, Mr. W. Nash, without delay in the hope that some improvement in the present licensing position might be effected for 1949.
