Death Duties on Plantations

Agreement on the advisability of raising once again the question of death duties upon standing timber was sig nified by members of the P.B. Catchment Board at their meeting yesterday. The matter was raised by Mr. 11. J. F. Tombieson, who pointed out that tree-planting, as a fundamental principle of soil conservation, should be encouraged by all possible means. The levying of death duties upon standing timber operated against this principle, he said, more particularly when it was realised that an asset such as a good plantation might be ruined by lire at any time. It was pointed out that the subject had been dealt with at a previous conference of catchment boards; but it was agreed that in view of its importance it should be included among the remits for the 1948 conference, subject to the delegates 'being provided with particulars of actual cases to support advocacy of the remit,
