THREE HOURS LATE
YESTERDAY’S RAILCAR TROUBLE WITH ENGINES Arriving at Gisborne three hours late yesterday afternoon, the railcar from Napier was two hours behind time in departing again, and about three hours late reaching Napier last night. Leaving Napier at 8.20 a.m. yesterday, the railcar developed engine trouble about half-way between Napier and Wairoa. Temporary repairs were effected, but the engines had to be operated at only a fraction of their usual power for the rest of the journey. The car arrived at Gisborne at 8.30 p.m., instead of the scheduled time of 12.35 p.m. As soon as the railcar arrived, members of the Gisborne station stall began the job of refuelling and cleaning it, in an effort to dispatch it for Napier at the scheduled time, 430 p.m. However, repairs had to be effected to the engines and it was not until shortly after 0.30 p.m., that the railcar left on its journey south. Although there were no breakdowns, the railcar proceeded fairly slowly to Napier, arriving there at midnight.
