Farmers of the district were looking forward to the second cattle fair of the season with some apprehension until the soaking rain of tire week-end-When the fair opened yesterday at the Mr.tawhcro salcyards it was found that, the downward trend had been arrested and where values did not come up to expectations vendors were not prepared to sell at any price.

Hawke’s Pay buyers came north to compete with local buyers and those from the Waikato and Whakatane. The Waikato and Hawke's Bay men were mainly interested in grown cattle and cows, while Whakatane was buying medium sorts. Taking condition into account, grown cattle were making ns much yesterday rs similar types realised on the first, day of the second fair last year. Younger sorts were not making the same money, however. On the whole, the cattle entered yesterday were showing more signs of the dry summer and hard feed than the stock offered at the first fair a fortnight ago. Any steers or bullocks with size were in demand.

The bettor lines of bullocks made from £l3 to £ls. a specially advertised line of 103 three and four-year-old P.A. bullocks offered on account of Mr. W. W. Smith. Mnneapoike. fetching £l4 15s. Thirty showing the Hereford cross from the same draft realised £ls. Medium-sized bullocks made <HI and better and light and small types ranged down to £B. Two and a-half year steers with size realised from £lO to £ll 17s, and others from £7 13s to £9 10s ; The 18-month-old steers were not in any great demand, the best of them sel'ing at from £8 10s to £9 9s, and others from £ 0 4s to £8 7s 6dAlthough several pens were passed in earlv.There were some cheap cattle so'd in' the first half-hour.
