NO HEAT, WATER, LIFTS

BOILER WORKERS’ STRIKE CHARWOMEN GO SLOW Xll a.m.) LONDON, March 15. The hot water, central heating and lift services have stopped at Buckingham Palace, both Houses of Parliament War Office, Law Courts and other Government Buildings as a result of a strike of 1700 boiler attendants who are demanding a rise of 22/- a week. Their Majesties are not in residence at the Palace. They are returning from Windsor in the afternoon.

The charwomen, who have already begun “go-slow” tactics at the Minisry of Works in support of higher pay demands, are threatening a “go-slow” in other Government offices. Each of the Government’s 3000 charwomen are supposed to keep 3000 square feet of floor space clean. The Speaker, when questioned in the the House of Commons about the boilermen’s strike, said he understood there was a strike on, but he knew nothing more except that he was unable to get a morning bath. It would be in order for members to wear greatcoats if the situation continued.
