Opening of Giant Cutting The opening of the giant Hangatiki cutting, 62ft. deep on its centre line and 90ft on the western face, is expected to bring traffic this week on to the Hangatiki-Te Kuitl State highway. The construction of the highway is on an entirely new line, and when the section is sealed next year a bitumen road will extend from Te Kuitl to Auckland. Building Society Loans Loans in three issues of the Gisborne Co-operative Building Society were dealt with at a meeting last evening, the amounts aggregating £2OOO. In No. 8 issue £7OO was offered for sale by tender, and realised £25 per £100; and in No. 10 issue a loan of £IOOO was balloted for, the successful shareholder being Mr. W. J. R. Grant. A ballot loan of £3OO drawn recently by a shareholder was put up for auction on his account, under a provision whereby the seller receives 85 per cent, of the cash premium, and realised £l2 per £IOOO.
Final Plans for Chief Guide's Visit. Final arrangements for the visit to Gisborne of Lady Baden-Fowell, G.8.E., World Chief Guide, were completed yesterday afternoon at a meeting of the provincial and divisional local association, presided over by Mrs. L- Balfour, provincial commissioner. The afternoon tea on Friday afternoon following the civic reception at 2.30 o’clock and the public address by Lady Baden-Powell at 3 p.m. at which local members of the association will meet the Chief Guide was also organised. The problem of providing morning tea and a lunch for country Guides who will arrive at Gisborne on Saturday morning for their welcome that afternoon was dealt with, catering arrangements for the Te Karaka, Manutuke, and Tokomaru Bay companies _ being ~
