ATTACK ON CASSINO.
Sir, —I have just been reading an interesting article in tonight’s Herald, “Beware the Ides of March!” The last few sentences read: “Two months later Cassino fell to the 4th British Division —supported by the 19th N.Z. Armoured Brigade.” This is correct, but why is there no mention of the Polish Division who lost 1800 men killed in this, the final assault on Cassino? This was the biggest loss of man power in any atten.pt to take Cassino. SAPPER 38492. ["The facts as stated are correct. The 4th British Division did capture Cassino. The Polish Corps' attack was designed to capture the Monastery and cut Route 6 behind the feature. No doubt our contributor, who had already written two columns, considered this another story.—Ed., Herald. |
