GUATEMALAN TALK
BREAK WITH BRITAIN “RECOVERY OF BELIZE” GUATEMALA CITY, Mar. 12. The Guatemalan Foreign Affairs Committee today presented a draft resolution to Congress urging that the Government be asked to "study the possibility of breaking diplomatic relations with England.” The committee recommended also that the Government take unspecified steps for “the recovery of the national territory of Belize (British Honduras).” Congress began an immediate debate on the measure. The Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Senor Munoz Meany, has informed American businessmen that the Guate-mala-British Honduras border would be reopened as soon as the cruiser Sheffield left Belize. Admiral Sir William Tennant said today, however, that there were no plans to withdraw his command ship from this area.
An American timber company which is felling the mahogany forests in Guatemala for shipment through British Honduras, is losing 5000 dollars a day because of the border being closed. If and when H.M.S. Sheffield goes it is expected H.M.S. Gloucester will stay behind. It is generally believed here that one chief result of the incident will be the stationing of a permanent, if small, force in the territory, which previously was totally unguarded.
