GARBAGE COLLECTION
Sir, —I was amazed when I came to reside in Gisborne about three years ago to find that garbage was collected from the backyard of each residence. As far ns my knowledge goes, this is not done anywhere else in New Zealand. I was even more amazed to read the adverse criticism in Saturday’s Herald of Mr. Kohn's progressive proposal
Why not carry the critics’ ideas right out and revert to the system of having our mail delivered to the door and so save us the trouble of collecting from the front gate? If Gisborne wants this super-service of garbage collection, then the people will have to face up to the fact that it has to be paid for and is costing money which could be much better used for really essential purposes. PROGRESS
bar, —It would appear that Francis Stafford has no knowledge of or has taken little notice of 1 the refuse collection of other towns and cities. For example, in Wellington one would find that garbage would remain in the backyard if the householder failed to put it at the gate. Admittedly carrying full tins may be troublesome for elderly people, but it seems disgusting that ail other Gisborne householders have to be molly-coddled because of this. Were lorries to be put on with three men they could average 60 houses per hour providing refuse tins were put at the gate. _ Compare this with Mr. Stafford s estimate of one man per horse and cart averaging 12 houses per hour. The truck, which has double the loading capacity of a horse and cart, would also cut down the tip trip by about two-thirds. K. w.
