AUCKLAND SUCCESS

JUNIOR ATHLETICS ! LUMLEY SHIELD OTAGO I RAIN SLOWS UP TRACKS j Auckland retained the H. L. Towers | Shield for junior competition and for j the first time lost the Lumley Memorial Shield for the women’s competition when the sixth national junior and women's track and field championships were completed on Saturday, Heavy rain had deadened the ground, but in the afternoon conditions were warm and pleasant. Otago's success in the Lumley Shield was well achieved by a small but a most capable team. Auckland’s success in the junior competition was expected and in the field events youths demonstrated their particular efficiency. The clear-cut win of the shield by the centre could not, however, detract from the splendid performance by Waikato in finishing third, a point behind Wellington. The team was gathered from, all parts of the large district. but in spite of this disadvantage members displayed a high average level of ability. Host of Good Performances Of the host of good performances during the day perhaps the best were Miss E. Dowman’s determined effort to retain her 75 yards title after she had been beaten by Miss S. Harman in the 100yds., the javelin throwing of N. Grinter (Waikato), the clear-cut win by a 16-year-old Wellington boy, D. Jowett, in the 220yds., and a most splendidly judged run by J. Sloan (Hawke’s Bay) in the two miles. Miss Hardmann’s chance of taking a double was marred by an inexpert start in the 75 yards and even at 50 yards she was still among the ruck. From there to the finish she moved with pace and power and with another 10 yards ti run might conceivably have beaten Miss Dowman.

Like Miss Dowman, Jowett revenged defeat to win his title. He had had to yield by at least a yard in the 100 yards to R. J. Stoddart, a strongly-built Canterbury youth. Jowett handled the two sharp bends of the 220 yards race particularly well, and held on to win by four yards in, for the conditions, a very smart time.

Grinter’s javelin throwing was remarkably good and his best throw of 171 feet was comparable with good efforts among the seniors. Sloan's two miles was likewise full of promise. He was content for most of the race to hang in third or second place not for from the leader, but approaching the last lap he let go. Within 50 yards he was seven or eight yards ahead and he kept increasing his lead to the finish, Wilson Wins Half-Mile

N. T. O. Wilson (Auckland), who lost his chance in the mile run on Friday by losing his shoe in the first quartermile, made amends by winning the half-mile after leading from the start

to the finish. It was a strenuous race and when the quarter-mile came along about 80 minutes later Wilson had not the strength to prevent two strong young men, R. Jarden (Wellington) and L. O’Keefe (West Coast, North Island) from getting the lead and holding it. Detailed results, with centres designated A Auckland, W Waikato, HB Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay, WC West Coast North Island, WG Wellington, C Canterbury, O Otago were:— JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 100 yards.—R.
