Low Pressure Irrigation
While there have been many visitors from time to time at the orchard of Mr. L. Grey, Ormond, to see the benefits of irrigation in a dry season, few have seen the system in operation. A demonstration of the plant under sprinkling conditions will be staged on Wednesday afternoon to coincide with the third watering of a section at. the orchard. A pressure of 501 bis maintained in light pipes, reducing from sin. to 4in. and then 3in., by a 20-horse-power electric motor pumping from the Waipaoa River. Half an acre of orchard can be watered at a move through 65 sprinklers and the rate of irrigation is equivalent to 1.75 in. of rain per hour. The capacity of the pump is 30,000 gallons per hour.
