THE RATING SYSTEM
Sir,—My attention has been called to an item in the Herald of February 28, in which Federated Farmers is reported as wanting a further reduction in the hospital rate, which is now a half-penny in the £l. Those belonging to this organisation holding title to land of low value and those holding no land title at all should investigate carefully this proposal, which appears to be for the benefit of the title holder of high value. Last November a rating _ poll at Oamaru was held, rating on unimproved value being adopted by a majority of 147. In Nelson city the count was equal, 1116 for and against unimproved value rating. A recount gave a majority of seven votes to that system of rating, which was carried. U V
