MET IN COLOMBO

AUCKLANDER AND DUKE EXCHANGE OF LETTERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 11. Two men met in a bar in Colombo and struck up a friendship. One was Mr. C. Coulam, now back in Auckland after 15 years. The other was the now Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Princess Elizabeth. Mr. Coulam was i n Australia at the outbreak of the war and joined the Australian Imperial Force, and the Duke of Edinburgh was with H.M.S. Ramillies, which escorted the troopship in which Mr. Coulam travelled to the Middle East. They met in the Colombo bar, and Mr. Coulam has since had two letters from the Duke, one of which is the reply to his letter of congratulation on the occasion of the Royal wedding and which states in part: “Thank you for your charming letter of congratulations and for the nice things you say. It was indeed a pity we could not meet again while I was out in Australia."

It was signed “Philip Mountbatten.”
