RISING HOUSING COSTS
85 % IN NINE YEARS CANBERRA, March 9. Housing costs have risen 80 to 85 per cent in the six capital cities of Australia since the middle of 1939, according to figures issued today by the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. N. Lemmon. The biggest rise from March to September of last year was in Sydney, where costs increased 10.8 per cent, chiefly because of the institution of the 40-hour week. The figures are based on the housing cost index for four specimen houses of a moderate size and conventional design in each city.
