PREVIOUS ACCIDENTS
NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS Previous accidents in the history of the New Zealand Railvvavs. with the loss of life and injury in them, are as follows: September 11. 1880: Rimutaka Incline: carriages blown off line; 3 killed and a number injured. March 11, 1899: Rakaia (Canterbury!: collision between trains: 4 killed and between 30 and 40 injured. May 28. 1913: New Lynn (Auckland): collision between passenger train and locomotive; 20 injured. May 27, 1914: Whangamarino: express and goods train collision; 2 killed and seven injured. July 6. 1923: Ongarue: express ran into slip; 12 killed, 2 died from injuries, and 30 injured. . .September 22. 1925: Te Aute (Hawke's Bay): express derailed; 2 killed and 20 injured. October 8, 1936: Pigeon Bush Flat (Wairarapa): railcar blown off line; 1 ki’led and 12 injured. March 26, 1938: Ratana: train derailed: 6 killed and 14 injured. June 4. 1943: Hyde (Central Otago); train derailed: 21 killed and 37 injured. November 8. 1943: Haywards (Hutt Valley): train derailed: 3 killed and 21 injured.
