CHAMPIONS MEET AT WELLINGTON TROTS

(Herald Special Service.) Wellington as a trotting fixture is gradually but surely improving its status, and with a generous prizelist is attracting the best class of pacer and trotter. For the meeting which commence; at Hutt Park tomorrow the class is easily the best ever seen there, with Emulous, Highland Fling and otherwho recently participated in the InterDominion Trotting Championships, while also there will be the Australian visitors who are regaining their good form and should race much more prominently than they ■ did at Alexander Park recently. Highland Fling after his New Zealand Cup success in the spring was described as one of the best pacers that had ever raced in the Dominion and in a sense dethroned Emulous as the chief light-harness horse in the Dominion. When he beat him in the Free-For-All that opinion was substantiated. At the recent Auckland meeting Highland Fling was disappointing on the first day. but in his next start over a mile and a half won brilliantly, breaking the track record and equalling the best ever registered in New Zealand. The same day Emulous was defeated into second place in time 4sec. slower than Highland Fling recorded three-quarters of an hour earlier. IIAS WON OVER £20,000 IN STAKES Last Saturday Emulous won in world record time for a race over two miles and not only won but on the day outclassed his opponents. Highland Fling was pulled up over the last two furlongs after going into a tangle, which is offered as an excuse. Why did he go into that tangle at a critical moment? The answer, to the writer, is that the pace was so hot that it forced him into a break. Emulous has now won over £20,000 in prize-money and, although Highland Fling has some great performances to his credit, Emulous is entitled to be classed as the better horse. Unbiassed trotting men said that Emulous is the greatest light-harness horse New Zealand has ever produced. The two will meet again tomorrow over a mile and five furlongs. Other good pacers are engaged, including the Auckland Cup winner Single Direct, Sprayman, Acropolis (great on soft going). Dundee Sandy, Double Peter, Loyal Nurse, Knave of Diamonds, Integrity (a New Zealand Cup and recent winner). Turco (winner of the Consolation last week-end) and the two Australians, Bandbox and Para Derby.
