SURF CLUB RACES

TROPHY PROSPECTS INTER-CLUB CONTESTS Members of the two district surf clubs are building up interest rapidly towards the climaxx of the season, which will be marked by two inter-club events for valuable trophies, for surf lacing and for life-saving respectively. The activities of the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club at the Y/aikanac Beach are more in the public eye than these of the Wainui Surf Lite-Saving Club, but the two groups are keeping fairly well in step in their respective programmes and the competitions for the Charlie Adair Troohy, in surfracing, and Ihe G. A. Nicholls Cup for rescue and resuscitation work should prove close. The Gisborne club’s team of r 'x for the surf-race will be selected following a trial to be held next Sunday at 10.30 a m at the Waikanae Bench. Two races were held in (he De Costa Cup club series at the Waikanae Beach on recent week ends. In each there were eight starters, and in llie first, over a distance of 250yds. in poor surf conditions. R Brown, B. Blair and B. McLean were placed first, second and third, the winner's time being smin. 24see. In the second, over 350yds. in very choppy surf, B McLean, 20sec., was placed first with K. Morse, scr.. second, and I. Butler. 40sec., third. The winner's time was fitnin. 37sec. Leading competitors in the De Cosia Cun series at present are K. Morse and G. Odams.
