PASSENGERS RESCUED

FLOOD-STRANDED TRAINS TOWNSHIP SHORT OF FOOD (11.15 a.m.) PERTH, Feb. 26. A plane has ferried five passengers from a flood stranded train at Zanthus, 130 miles east of Kalgoorlie, to Kalgoorlie. Other passengers may follow because the train is unlikely to reach Kalgoorlie before tomorrow night. Passengers on the Kalgoorlie express, which is stranded about 40 miles east of Kalgoorlie: have reached Kalgoorlie by truck.

Three men unsuccessfully tried to cross a mile-wide lake of fioodwater to get badly needed food supplies from Kalgoorlie. The food was for the residents of Broad Arrow, a goldmining centre 16 miles north of Kalgoorlie. One section of the road between Broad Arrow and Kalgoorlie 'is 7ft under water for one mile. The three men made a raft and tried to cross the water, but a strong current forced them back They then attempted to swim across, but two men developed cramp and had to turn back. The third man got into difficulties but was rescued.
