LETTER TO JUDGE

“ACTION QUITE WRONG” SENTENCE ON PRISONER (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 26. A warning against sending to a judge letters about a prisoner who is to be sentenced was given by Mr- Justice Callan in the Supreme Court yesterday. His Honour said he had received a letter from one of the parents of a man who was to come before him and that was quite wrong, although he realised that the writer of the letter did not understand that the proper way for justice to be administered _ was that anything to be said on eithe r side should be said openly in Court in the presence of both parties. A great many people did not understand' that. It was something approaching contempt of Court to try to influence a judge by writing private letters. It should not be done. * If the parents wanted to make representations on behalf of their erring children, they should get in touch with counsel.
