Tomorrow's Racing Form Guide

DUNEDIN CENTENNIAL CUP HAS DRAWN FINE HCP. FIELD

(Herald Special Service.) TOMORROW will see the opening- of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s twoday Centennial meeting, at which the richest prize ever offered in Otago, £4OOO, is attached to the Centennial Cup, of 1;] miles.

11 is sonic years since a race as fains this has figured on the DJ.C. programme, although in the early days tne Dunedin Cup was run over 2 1-4 miles, then two miles, and later 1 3-4 miles, which was further reduced to a mile and a half. . The main event tomorrow is likely to develop into a race well worth while. The field includes Howe, one of the i oe.st handicap horses in the Dominion ! today. Signal Officer, a gelding that dc--1 feated Beau Le Havre in the Inst weight-for-age Cantcrubury Cup; Sparc i Hart, who last month won the Welling- ! ton Cup so easilv; Indian Dawn, one of the best middle-distance handicap mares in New Zealand; the Derby winner of 1946, Royal Tan, and other horses, who have shown winning form this season, but the two premier handicap horses. Beau Le Havre and King s Ransom, are, unfortunately, not among the acceptors. The brilliant three-year-old filly, Excellency, is listed in the sprint race and, despite her 9.7, is going to be a very hot fancy. EARLY SETTLERS HURDLES .Filibeg:, 11.7, is an honest gelding over any kind of jumps, but may find his job very tough here. Voltaire, 11.4, has racing condition on his side, and with recent winning form to support his chances looks dangerous. Wee. Mac, 10.13, won three hurdle races earlier in the season and as he recently won a mile hack flat event must be well forward and looks a favourite. Court Dress, 10.5, occasionally produces the goods so will have his followers. Forage, 10.1, is on the up-grade and has performances which point to itis chances of success. Robert, 9.12. is another winner over hurdles engaged. At Gore he won the highweight the Saturday before last. First Out, 9.10, has won a hurdle race this season. Gamble, 9.7, has been well reported upon and, being a son of that great mare Cuddle, might surprise. The Gunllier-Pcrcy bracket seems a possibility as the former is held in high regard and Percy has won in all three branches. Sir Saladin. with a little recent place form, looks the best of the others. HAERE MAI HANDICAP Sea Venture, 9.7, won recently, but now has a weight that will fully test him. VVaiau King. 9.0, was second early this season, but has not raced in the last few months. Billv Mac, 3.10, with only a third on his list this term, hardly appeals. Olio, 8.10, one of the promising Salmagundi breed, was second in both his recent starts. Flibbertigibbet, 8.7, is well reported on. She ran second in her first race this season, out since has been thrice unplaced. Grania, B.G. ran prominently enough at Gore the other week to enter a final summing-up.

be relied upon to go the distance and nothing will stria better than he. FRISK AY (4), 7.8, at the weight is just a Dossibility. AUTHENTIC til), 7.1, won at his appearance on this track so on that score is given a rough show. THORN BRIDGE l2), 7.0, might not be forward enough. PRIDE OF MOSSRURN (5), 7.0, is at best only a moderate. FINE NIGHT GO, 7.0, will be considered in the light of a dangerous light-weight with recent racing benefiting him. SIR GARNISH 19). 7.0. has been racing well enough to suggest him being a possibility. KARTIKEYA (15), 7.0, the only three-year-old engaged, would have a chance if the track was easy. Of the others, little good can be said about them over the distance. BERNICIA HANDICAP Card Money. 8.6, at best is only an average juvenile. Baygundi, 8.5. has not come up to expectations since winning. The Dob, 8.1, in his only start to date won easily at Southland. Finigin, 8.0, with a few placings on his sheet is not overlooked. Kosher’s (7.10) best to date was second to The Hob. The balance have yet to show form good enough to attract attention. VICTORY HANDICAP Sea Power, iO.O, is in winning vein, but has sufficient weight to keep him busy here. Air Ace, 9.7, likes it soft. Benbucula, 9.6, is not fancied. Great Coon, 9.6, was fourth in his last effort, which was prefaced by three unplacings. Lovemorn, 9.2, should go a merry mile in her present form. Gold Song, 8.11, has been in the money more times than he has been out of it this season. Loyal Lady, 8.10, is not an easy marc to follow, but has won some fair events. Merry Lancer, 8.8, was impressive in a recent start; will be very hard here. Sanskrit, 8.7, with. plenty of place form reads a possibility, but over a mile will have to be taken on trust. Magnaform, 8.6, seems to have struck his best of late and having won the Queen’s Plate, 1 mile, can be relied upon to be suited by the present course. Siegform, 8.5, is another with recent winning form, making this race one of the most difficult to sum up on the list. Black Light, 8.3. and Wild Ribbon. 8.0, possess the best form of those weighted further down the list. The latter reccntl.v won a highweight at Riccarton all the way.

Hclio. 8.4. has no place form. Victory Star, 84, a well-bred four-year-old, boasts one second in lour starts this term. Royal Lark, 8.4, was successful last week at Core. Faustina. 8.4. was in the money the other week en the West Coast (5.1.). There is little to be said in favour of the remainder, many of whom arc unknown quantities. JOHN WICKLIFFE HACK Relampago, 8.11. when commissioned seems to race best. Gipsy Major, 8.6, on report from his training quarter is e'xpected to make a bold showing. Bonny Royal, 8.5, won over this distance at Southland at New Year. Right Through, 8.4, also won a sevenfurlong hack event at New Year, hut at Oarnaru. Manatone, 7.13, in five starts this season has not weighed-in once. Show Boy, 7.11, is a Ringmaster so might do anything. He has been twice second this year. Flying Control, 7.11, will appeal as he has been in the money in his last four starts, which included a win. Sally Gazelle, 7.11, reads better than any situated below her in the handicap. HANDICAP EXCELLENCY (4), 9.7, will be at a Kindergarden price. RED PICKLE (6), 9.3, is included among the best sprinters down south, but his last three starts have brought no grist to the mill. DESERT GIRL (7), 8.3, is a marc right up to the average down south and may be second in demand. GOLD SONG (1), 8.0, is not without winning form but at provincial meetings. DEEP HARMONY (2), 7.5, at times turns cn a good performance, but not too often. DILEAS (5), 7.5, a Thompson Handicap winner, since when he lias not shown the right form. SAL’S PAL (3), 7.4, finished second at Gore last week-end. BATH SLIPPER (9), 7.2, is not greatly fancied, but lias run some of his best races on the Wingatui track. STAGESTRUCK (8), 7.0, makes up the field. CENTENNIAL CUP HOWE (1), 9.1, the virtual top-weight, has an impost he is master of, although he failed in the Wellington Cup with 8.11. Ho is reported to have left Wellington in his best condition. SIGNAL OFFICER (10), 8.11, was unable to contest the Wellington Cup, but had recovered sufficiently to be saddled up for the Trentham Stakes, in which he ran second to King’s Ransom. Tlie latest report regarding him is that he is A.l. SPARE PART (17), 8.8, is down 21b. for his fifth in the Wellington U.C. Handicap. His win in the Cup at Trentham was most impressive. INDIAN DAWN (12), 8.5, is a marc that is going to take a lot of beating. Earlier she won the Dunedin Cup, 1 miles, easily, and since lias won again when with 8.0 she beat Howe at Trentham and now meets the Wellingtonian on 51b worse terms. DETAIN (8), 8.3, wort well over a mile and a half at Iliccarton earlier this month after being last away. On his day he is "tops”. ROYAL TAN G 3), 7.13. since running second in the N.Z. Clip has had some hard racing without winning. Me can

EDINBURGH HACK Beccliwood, 9.1, seems just good enough to get beaten, although an easy track might see him breaking his run of ‘outs". Desert Victory. 9.0, was a winner at Riccarton in his last attempt. Grand Pal, 89, this season has only once failed to weigh-in. Amongst his placings in one first. Dowlair, 88. is not without winning form this year. Lady Melrose, 8.6, recently heat a hot order in Full Play. Responsive, 8.3, has been backed and beaten of late. Pcstec, 8.0, two weeks back surprised, prior to which his form was poor. Bobby Dazzler, 7.11, on form, is passed 'over, but her turn may come in the near future. Defendant. 7.10, may do the best of the remainder.
