TRAIL OF HAVOC

w. AUSTRALIAN GALE MANY TOWNS FLOODED TRAIN TRAFFIC STOPPED PERTH, Feb. _ 23. Bushfires and a cyclone did widespread damage in Western Australia at the week-end. The fires are under control but the cyclone is heading towards Kalgoorlie. The cyclone originated near Broome and swept inland, leaving a trail of Hoods and broken communications. Many towns are isolated. At Kalgoorlie more than 10 inches of rain fell, resulting in houses being flooded, fences swept away, roads washed out and railways made impassable. Two transcontinental trains, scheduled to leave Perth yesterday, were cancelled. The floodwaters at Boulder are half a mile wide and waist-deep and last night people were being evacuated by the police. Bushfires caused extensive damage to nine farms in Serpentine-Keysbrook district. ... „ A later message states that all passenger traffic on the trans-Australian Railway has been suspended indefinitely because of wash-outs caused by fhe recent heavy rains in Western Australia. Three trains are now stranded. A '.ruck from Coolgardie has reached the scene of the Perth-Kalgoorlie express with sufficient food to last two days.
