MOBILITY OBJECTIVE

BRITAIN’S BOMBER FORCE BEST USE OF AIRCRAFT (1 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 23. The Secretary for Air, Mr. A. Henderson in a memorandum accompanying the air estimates says the Royal Air Forces operational commands will continue to develop to practise improved methods of obtaining the maximum effectiveness from the aircraft with which it is equipped. The Air Council is giving special attention to the bomber force since efficient striking forces are Britain’s most effective safeguard against aggression.

The council, said Mr. Henderson, attached great importance to increasing the force’s mobility and reducing dependence on widespread and elaborate base organisation. The council’s aim was to enable the development of a substantial weight of air power at short notice in any required area. Work on this problem was being done concurrently with planning the redevelopment of the Royal Air Force overseas following the withdrawal of units in India, Pakistan and Burma ; id the relinquishment of the Palestine mandate. The estimates, issued todav, show the total at £173,000.000—£41,000,000 below the 1947-48 figure.
