YACHT ENTHUSIASTS GISBORNE WINS CUP FIVE CRAFT ON TOUR Making their first tour to an outside regatta, members of the Gisborne Yachl Club visited Napier last week-end and gained confidence and valuable experience. They returned with the cup presented by the Napier club for competition between Napier and Gisborne craft, It was the second annual competition for the 'cup. Last Easter Napier boats came to Gisborne and competed successfully for the cup m a series of races. Gisborne crews have now brought- the cup back from Napier. .

Gisborne was represented last weekend by Ariel, Clyde, Ajax, Dam-fino in the open class and Rex Forbes Was th« Gisborne representative in the Tauranga division. Clyde, well sailed by T. Bonico, was successful in obtaining most points in the open race on handicap. The Gisborne boats were railed to Napier'on Tuesday night and their crews arrived on Thursday morning. Eight-Mile Cup Race The first, race, which was sailed opposite the town beach, consisted of a run from the buoy out from the fountain to another buoy a mile down the beach and a tight lead back. Veronique was first .followed by the Ruler, Spray, Makatiki, Nereid, Ariel (Gisborne), Clyde (Gisborne) and Zephyr. On handicap, Veronique was first, followed by Clyde (Gisborne), second. The first race for the cup was held on Friday morning with an eight-mile course and 18 yachts facing the, starter, j Most of the boats got away to a good start. Crossing the finishing line, Ariel (Gisborne) was second after the 26ft Pataki, Veronique, Ariel (Napier), Clyde (Gisborne), Nereid, Rehia, Zephyr, Typhoon, Nimrod, Bofor, Breeze, Gale, Valliant, Ajax, Spray arid Dam-fino. On handicap, Ariel (Napier) was first, followed by Ariel (Gisborne), Clyde (Gisborne), Veronique and Zephyr. The course for Friday afternoon was the same as for the morning, only the wind had freshened a little. First boats over the starting line were Bofor, Rehia Gale, Zephyr and Veronique. This race was exciting in that there was a narrow margin Detween the first six boats home, and positions were constantly on the change all the way round the course. The two larger yachts, Makatiki and Veronique, drew away as usual to leave the smaller boats to fight amongst themselves. Clyde then drew away on the run and took the lead from Ariel. She maintained this to the starting buoy, where Ariel again took the lead until her port shroud carried away and held her up for a few moments Nereid rounded the Auckland Rock followed by Clyde, Rehia and Ariel (Gisborne). Clyde managed to pass Nereid on the last reach to the finishing line, followed by Rehia and Ariel (Gisborne). On handicap, Breeze (Napier) was first, followed by Nereid, Gale, Clyde .(Gisborne), Zephyr, Valliant, Rehia, Ariel (Gisborne) and Typhoon On Saturday morning the wind was light and steady from the north-east. Veronique was first, followed by Ariel (Gisborne), Clyde (Gisborne), Rehia, and Nereid. ’After handicaps had been adjusted Ajax (Gisborne), was first, followed by Dam-fino (Gisborne), Clyde (Gisborne) and Ariel (Gisborne), fourth. In the last race on Saturday afternoon Clyde was at its best and, apart from the 18-footer Makatika, Clyde and Ariel led the fleet by a large margin., Makatika was first over the finishing line, followed by Clyde, Ariel. Rehia and Nereid. On handicap in this race Clyde came eighth and Ariel fourteenth. • The points gained by the yachts racing before handicap adjustments have been made are:—Veronique (Napier), 300 points; Ariel (Gisborne), 211.89 points; Clyde (Gisborne), 206.66 points; Makatika (Napier), 136.6 points; Rehia, 141.9 points; Nereid, 139.99 points. On handicap Clyde (Gisborne) won the cup, with Frady Kat second, Breeze third, and Ariel fourth.
