Although both drove well and maintained a good length in the opening stages Jefferd made too many mistakes and his opponent had no trouble in taking the first set,- 6-1. In the second set Jefferd showed much better form and frequently forced Paerata into errors. The score rose one-all, two-all, three-all four-all, five-all and six-all, but Paerata took the next two games, after losing three match points, to take th e set and match.

With the title goes the East Coast Press Cup and a miniature presented by the club.

New Year Tourney

At a meeting of the tournament committee last week considerable discussion took place concerning the annual New Year fixture in view of the infantile paralysis epidemic. It decided to hold the tournament, but to exclude players or spectators of 16 years and under, the fixture to be cancelled if the position of the epidemic at a later stage indicated that necessity. In spite of a possible drop i n entries the value of trophies is to remain at the figure set last year, 25gns. This is considerably higher than at most such tournaments.

Mr S. Lyle-Smythe who was secretary at the first two tournaments, held in 1939 and 1940, was eiected tournament secretary with Mr W. K. Williams as assistant tournament secretary. Mr G. Hassell was elected tournament treaurer and Messrs. C. T. Jefferd and G. W. Eivers are to be asked to take charge oi the umpires and refereeing again. Entries close on December 28 and the draw is to be made the following evening. The handicapping committee is: Messrs E. J. Knox, J. W. Oates, S. LyleSmythe and Father Bowling. .
