U.S. AIR DEFENCE
USE OF MORE SUPERFORTS (9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 12. The U.S. Air Force announced today that 250 Superfortress bombers are being withdrawn from storage to add to the United States active air defence screen.
This is part of the air defence programme announced several months ago, envisaging 55 complete air groups of bombers and fighters, plus 15 skeleton groups.
The air force now has 32 groups ready and is reconditioning Superfortresses from storage areas throughout the country. The air force spokesman said that a few bomber pilots were being recalled to fly the Superfortresses but the air force had enough pilots on active duty to make a large recall unnecessary.
