DANGEROUS PRACTICE
SHIPMASTERS DAZZLED LIGHTS FROM CARS Attention to a dangerous practice which had developed when ships were entering the port of Gisborne and berthing at night was drawn by the harbourmaster, Captain G. McK. Smart, in his report at yesterday’s meeting of the Gisborne Harbour Board. Motorists were driving on to the wharves and parking with headlights full on, directed at the ship and the tug. This dazzled shipmasters and the tug-master and constituted a danger to navigation. The practice was most pronounced during the berthing of the Wainui on September 24 at 9.30 p.m. The signalman had frequently warned motorists of the danger but as he had to attend to signalling and lines, he could not control all cars. A serious view of the matter was taken by members of the board, and it was decided that the matter should be taken up with the Gisborne Borough Council and the Automobile Association (Auckland), asking if their traffic officers would co-operate with the board in stopping the practice.
