FUTURE OF TROPHY SUB-UNIONS’ PLAY EAST COAST SUGGESTION With their success over East Coast at Ruatoria on Saturday, the Poverty Bay Rugby representatives lifted the Barry Cup, held since last season by East Coast. Following the match the trophy was formally presented to the captain of the winning team, R. McKinley, by Mr V. G. H Rickard, president of the East Coast Rugby Union. Mr Rickard congratulated the Poverty Bay players on their success in one of the keenest games of the season and also commended them upon their training and superior standard of physical fitness which had beep the deciding factor. Mr Rickard referred to the fine spirit of sportsmanship which had been maintained during the long series of encounters between the unions and the service the two bodies had been able to give in furthering the interests ot Rugby. While the Barry Cup had been instrumental in sustaining interest in matches, he suggested that it might serve an even better purpose in future if regarded as a trophy (tor competition between the sub-unions of the East Coast and povery Bay Union and the Wairoa subunion which had the greatest proportion of success in the contests for the trophy. He recommended that the new holders should confer with the donors of the cup with a view to establishing such an arrangement. In reply Mr M. H. Beuth, chairman of the management committee of the P.B. union, thanked the East union for the hospitality extended lo the visitors and congratulated both fifteens on their display during the match. He end 1 rsed the view expressed by Mr Rickard that the Barry Cup might assist the game to a higher degree if allocated for challenge games among sub-unions and indicated his intention to lake the matter up with, the necessary auhorities.
