TRUMAN CONDEMNED WALLACE'S BLUNT ATTACK <8.30 a.fln.) NEW YORK, Sept. 21. Condemning what he called war and anti-communism hysteria in the United States, the former Vice-President, Mr. Henry Wallace, in a speech in Philadelphia. said he was shocked by President ■ Truman’s instruction from the battleship Missouri that Mr. James Forrestal be sworn in immediately as Secretary of Defence because of the international emergency. *'l insist that if there is a genuine emergency, the people have the right to an explanation,” he said. “If there is no emergency, this action rates as the very -lowest method of breeding war. President Truman’s action is not a techinque which will melt Russian stubbornness and it certainly will not endear us to peace-loving peoples throughout the world.” The former vice-president, Mr. Henry Wallace, told a press conference i today that the American Press was "contributing a part in building up war hysteria in the United States.” While refusing to comment on M. Vyshinsky’s speech, he said of United States foreign policy: “We are making fast friends of every reactionary in Europe,” and repeated that he would not support President Truman for re- . election if he considered Mr. Truman war heading i a war party.
