Where the Flemish Weavers Worked New Zealanders visiting England would be well repaid by a trip to the picturesque old village of Lavenham in Suffolk. For here are the houses of the Flemish weavers, built in the time of Queen Elizabeth. Here was founded an industry that was to become one of the greatest in England and one that played a vital part in the development and prosperity' of New Zealand. It is not kuown when the first Flemish weavers came to England—possibly it was during the reign of William the Conqueror. But these celebrated craftsmen, whose skill was regarded as a Heavenendowed gift, made their appearance from time to time, through various causes but always attracted by the excellent quality of English-grown wool. King Edward the Third, called the founder of the English Woollen Industry, induced great numbers of them to come over and gave them many’ special privileges. In Queen Elizabeth’s reign fresh encouragement was given to Flemish Artisans to settle in England and they built their houses and installed their looms wherever there were sheep. The art of fine weaving has spread far since the Flemings brought it to England. And at Tattersfield Broadloom Mills we proudly carry on the traditions that were born in sucl. famous places as Lavenham. TattersfieM Broadloom Mill*, Richmond, Auckland.
