THISTLE_VICTORY THURSDAY CUP PLAY HARD FOUGHT FINAL By “Dribbler” A meritorious victory was achieved by Thistle on Saturday in the final of the senior knock-out competition for the Thursday Cup conducted by the Poverty Bay Football Association. In the junior grade surprise wins were registered by P. and T. and R-S.A. Final Results Seniors—Thistle 2 v. Wanderers 1. Juniors. —First Round: R.S.A. 3 v. Rovers 1. Semi-finals: P. and T. 4 vWanderers 1; R.S-A. 4 v. Thistle 0. Schoolboys.—lntermediate 2 v. Celtic 0. Experience V. Youth The senior cup final was contested by an experienced Thistle eleven and a youthful Wanderers team with the shill of the former being offset by the determined efforts of the latter. After a goal-less first half, Thistle opened the scoring when good following up by A. Easton achieved a goal. The equaliser came shortly afterwards when Jack Watt netted from close range for Wanderers, but with 10 minutes to go Johnny Watt regained the lead for Thistle with a fine angle shot. The Thistle forwards combined consistently well throughout and were held in check only by the resolute tackling of the Wanderers’ defence. The two scorers stood out in this division, while R. Lowe was prominent in the half line. The backs, Jarvie and Miller, were sound at all times, while iu goal J. Yanr.an saved splendidly. At the other end, C. Booth also gave a fine performance iu goal, "being ably supported by two hard-working backs in L. Fo'ey and A. Waugh. Gilford was the outstanding half, while considerable improvement .was shown in this division by I). Roe and I). Waugh. Jury and Libeau were conspicuous in the Wanderers vanguard which, although rarely playing as a settled combination, ■ howed good pace and thrust. Success of R.S.A. Juniors The opening games in Lie junior knock out competition for the Stone, am Cup were also played on Saturday and following up their surprise defeat of Rovers iu the first, r °und R.S.A. won their semi-final against Thistle to enter the final. In the first game goals were scored for Rovers by J. Sellrnau and for R.S.A. by a Rovers’ defender, If. Uuderdown, and W. i- inlay, the latter player also scoring all four goals against Thistle. The junior league champions and runnersup. Wanderers and P. and T., met in the other semi-final which resulted in a win for the. latter team for whom Garlick (2), Murray and Laniont were the scorers. Morrow scored for Wanderers. Schools' Championship The schoolboys’ competition concluded with Saturday's game between Celtic and Intermediate. the joint leaders in this grade, and winning by two goals to nil. Intermediate annexed the Cooper Shield for the 1947 schoolboys’ championship. Coal 3 were schred by Hickman and Blair. Next Saturday morning a trial game, Possibles v. Probables, will be held to select a schoolboys’ representative team to meet a junior colts team at a later date.
