CLOTHES RATIONS
CONTINUING NEXT YEAR AUSTRALIAN DEMANDS CANBERRA. Sept. 19. Clothes rationing would on present indications, continue next year, said the Minister of Trade and Customs, Senator Courtice. It was indicated in other quarters that coupons would be issued for another 12 months. The tightening of the present rationing scale is being considered but the final decision depends on dollar imports Senator Courtice issued a statement on stocktaking of piece goods held by traders on July 31, in which, he said, that while the total consumption of piece goods had increased by 5,000,000 square yards, the consumption on clothing cottons had declined by 8,000,000 square yards, due partly to the increased use of rayon as an alternative
The bulk of the cotton piece goods had to be imported and the United Kingdom and India were unable to supply enough to fill Australian requirements even under rationing
