WOOL PRICES RISE
OPENING LONDON SALES BRADFORD BUYS HEAVILY LONDON, Sept. 18. Wool catalogued at the opening sales of the fifth series for 1947 totalled 21,732 bales, of which 21,500 bales were sold. The offering included 7756 bales from New Zealand and 11,662 from Australia. Government and privately-owned wools sold actively, with Bradford taking the major portion and France being the chief Continental buyer. There were moderate Russian purchases. The prices generally were from 10 to 15 per cent above the closing rates of the July series.
The sales have opened with strong competition and a large attendance of ouyers, according to a cabled report received in Gisborne from the London office of the Bank of New Zealand. There is an active demand by all branches of the trade, with all-round increased prices. Sliped wools advanced from five to 10 per cent. Medium crossbred arid New Zealand scoured are 1C per cent higher, while greasy line crossbred prices are 12J to 15 per cent, higher.
