Gisborne National Savings For the week ending September 13 national savings investments equalling or exceeding the weekly quota were received at the 11 main post offices in the Gisborne postal district. Investments for the week amounted to £4BIO, of which £2320 was deposited at the Gisborne office. Dominion Day Holiday Dominion Day falls on Monday, September 22, and will be observed by the staffs of legal firms and accountancy businesses. The holiday is not a statutory and obligatory one for a majority of occupations, however, and is written into only a few industrial awards principally as an alternative to a later holiday which has statutory backing. Contract* Shearers’ Rates Following correspondence from Wairoa, Hamilton and Hawke’s Bay on contract shearing rates, a full discussion developed in committee at tha meeting of the meat and wool section of Federated Farmers of New Zealand in Gisborne yesterday. Messrs. S- D, Reeves, F. E. Humphreys, C. Mossman C. E. Matthews, A- H. Russell and J. Crarer were appointed a sub-committea to investigate the situation in Gisborne and East Coast districts and prepare * report. President Congratulated The congratulations of the Matawai branch of Federated Farmers were extended to the president, Mr. C. HWilliams, by Mr. T. A- Redpath at the meeting of the Gisborne provinciai executive of the federation yesterday, Mr.. Redpath referred to the fact that Mr.' Williams had been appointed a lift member of the federation at the recent annual conference. Mr. Williams thanked the Matawai branch and said he had received congratulatory letters from two other branches. School Terms and Holidays The dates for the three school terms next year were received from the Department of Education and approved at yesterday’s meeting in Napier of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. The first term for public schools will commence on Monday, February 2, and will close 14 weeks later on Friday, May 7. After a fortnight's holiday, schools will re-open on Monday, May 24, and close again on Friday, August 20 after 13 weeks. The third term begins on September 6 and after 15 weeks closes on Friday, December 17. The 1949 school year will begin on Tuesday, February I. During 1948 schools' will observe the usual holidays-
