STRIKE THREAT
CANTERBURY WORKERS SECRET BALLOT ISSUE WAGES DISSATISFACTION (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 25. A meeting of railwayman convened by the Addington branch of the A.S.R.S. to discuss the wages pronouncement and the proposed amendment to the I.C. and A. Act providing for strike ballots passed the following resolution unanimously:— “That this representative meeting of railwaymen commends our national executive for their stand in oposition to Section 8 of the proposed amendment to the Industrial Arbitration and Conciliation Act. We urge our executive to continue in support of the Federation of Labour in opposition to Section 8 of the proposed amendment. \ “We urgi Upon the national executive of the Federation of Labour to call a one-day strike of all affiliations immediately the proposed amendment is endeavoured to be made law. “Further, as workers we are gravely concerned at the failure of the Arbitration Court to deal justly with the wages application made by the Federation of Labour. We urge the federation to organise the workers of New Zealand and take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the workers a just and equitable wages increase. “Further, we are of the opinion that the workers should participate in the control and management of industry before being asked to increase production, as only by such participation in the control and management can we avoid further and increased exploitation. “We urge the Federation of Labour to exercise continued vigilance in the interests of the working class because there are many indications that a frontal attack is meditated upon our
wages and conditions.’’ Several speakers are reported to have criticised the Minister of Labour. Mr A. McLagan, some suggesting that he should be asked to resign.
